Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm, poetry with a beat

For Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm, poetry is the language of revolution.

Kateri is an Anishnaabe poet, writer, publisher and spoken word artist from the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation.

Her writing has been published in several anthologies, journals and magazines in North America, New Zealand, Australia and Europe. my heart is a stray bullet and bloodriver woman are two of her published works.

Publishing Company

In 1993, Kateri set up a small publishing company called Kegedonce Press. It's the only Aboriginal publishing company in Ontario.

As the managing editor, Kateri promotes the work of Aboriginal writers in Canada, as well as the work of indigenous writers from other parts of the world.

International Perspective

Kateri puts an international indigenous perspective in most of her work.

She edited two collections of modern American Indian, Inuit, First Nations, Australian Aboriginal and Maori writings called Skins: Contemporary Indigenous Writing and Without Reservation.

In 2002, Kateri conceived and organized Honouring Words, a successful series of international tours by indigenous writers from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Poetry & Music

Kateri has also released two poetry and music CDs, standing ground and A Constellation of Bones: Soundtrack.

On standing ground, she worked with indigenous musicians and singers from around the world. The project put 12 of Kateri's poems to music that blended Native drums, guitars and flutes with hip hop, trance and jazz.

On A Constellation of Bones: Soundtrack, Kateri worked with Maori hip-hop artist Te Kupu. The CD combined poetry with Anishnaabe and Maori music ranging from hip hop to tribal trance. It was nominated for a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award in 2008.
