The ministry committed in the New Approach to Aboriginal Affairs to working together with Aboriginal organizations and other Ontario government ministries to find ways to meet Ontario's obligation to consult on Aboriginal and treaty rights.
In June 2006, we distributed a draft set of consultation guidelines for ministries to seek input from key First Nations and Métis organizations, all Ontario First Nations and selected non-Aboriginal stakeholders.
The Chiefs of Ontario and the Métis Nation of Ontario are participating with us in the engagement process.
We are receiving input and look forward to receiving further input on the draft consultation guidelines.
This information is for general guidance only and is not a substitute for seeking legal advice. Ministry staff should always consult their Legal Services Branch to obtain advice on how the Crown's obligations to consult Aboriginal peoples may apply in particular circumstances.
