SAULT STE. MARIE – Ontario and Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council are partnering to make capital investments in the province's Aboriginal communities. They have signed an agreement to deliver Ontario's Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program (ACCGP) for 2002-2003, Ontario's Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Native Affairs David Young announced today.
Mamaweswen has been effectively administering and delivering the ACCGP program since November 2001. The total Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program allocation for the 2002-2003 year is $3.34 million. The Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program is part of a coordinated framework of more than 35 government programs and services under the Building Aboriginal Economies strategy.
Ontario is an investment partner in the strengthening of Aboriginal community economic development and self-reliance. "We remain committed to build capacity and provide opportunities for Aboriginal communities and organizations to administer programs themselves," said Young.
Mamaweswen is the Ojibway word for "working together". The Tribal Council, comprised of seven First Nations on the north shore of Lake Huron, delivers the ACCGP across Ontario. "Mamaweswen, the North Shore Tribal Council is looking forward to another productive year administering and delivering the Aboriginal Community Capital Grants program in partnership with the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat and Ontario," said Norma Diamond, Chief Executive Officer, North Shore Tribal Council.
The Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program consists of two components, including Ontario Native Community Infrastructure Projects and Native Small Business Centres. Program dollars fund the construction, acquisition, renovation and expansion of community centres, friendship centres, small business centres and business parks as well as feasibility studies leading to the development of these projects.
Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council has offices in Blind River and Cutler in northern Ontario. For more information or to discuss project eligibility, Mamaweswen can be reached at (705) 356-1691 or 1-877-463-3302.
