BLIND RIVER – An agreement has been signed with Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council to deliver Ontario's Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program (ACCGP) for 2001-2002. David Young, Ontario's Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Native Affairs announced the agreement today.
"Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council is well positioned to understand and service the infrastructure needs of First Nations and Aboriginal communities throughout Ontario," said Young. Ontario is an investment partner in the strengthening of Aboriginal community economic development infrastructure. The total Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program allocation for the 2001-2002 year is $3.1 million.
The Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program is part of a coordinated framework of more than 35 government programs and services under the Building Aboriginal Economies strategy. The strategy was announced by the Harris government in 1998 to take steps to strengthen self-reliance in Aboriginal communities.
The Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program consists of two components, including Ontario Native Community Infrastructure Projects and Native Small Business Centres. Program dollars fund the construction, acquisition, renovation and expansion of community centres, Friendship centres, small business centres and business parks and feasibility studies leading to the development of these projects.
"In making this announcement Ontario is demonstrating its commitment under the Aboriginal Policy Framework to build capacity and provide opportunities for Aboriginal communities and organizations to self-administer programs," said Young.
Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council has offices in Cutler and Blind River in northern Ontario. For more information or to discuss project eligibility, Mamaweswen can be reached at (705) 356-1691.
