QUEEN'S PARK – Mike Harris, Ontario's Premier, today expanded the government's Crime Control Commission as he announced the appointment of parliamentary assistants to the province's justice ministers.
David Tilson (MPP for Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey) remains Parliamentary Assistant to the Attorney General and Minister responsible for Native Affairs.
Bob Wood (MPP for London West) fills the newly-created position of Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Correctional Services.
Joe Tascona (MPP for Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford) becomes Parliamentary Assistant to the Solicitor General.
Tilson, Wood and Tascona together constitute the Crime Control Commission. The commission's mandate is to advise the government on additional ways to make our streets and our communities safer from crime.
"Many of our existing community safety initiatives result from the Commission's advice," Harris said. "I'm counting on the Commission to continue to explore ways we can fight crime and protect the security of Ontario families."
Tilson was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in September 1990. Wood and Tascona were first elected in June 1995. All three are lawyers.
Wood was a founding member of the Crime Control Commission, and served until 1999. Tilson has been a Commissioner since 2000.
Harris said that he and his Cabinet will rely heavily on the experience of Tilson, Wood and Tascona, noting that two of the three justice ministers are new. (Solicitor General David Turnbull and Attorney General David Young, a first-time cabinet minister, were both appointed last month. In addition, Correctional Services Minister Norm Sterling does double-duty as Minister of Consumer and Business Services.)
