Ontario and Métis Nation Strengthen Relationship

Aboriginal Affairs Minister and Métis Nation of Ontario President Sign Historic Agreement that Aims to Improve the Quality of Life for Métis in Ontario

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Brad Duguid and Métis Nation of Ontario President Gary Lipinski today signed an historic agreement recognizing the unique history and ways of life of Métis communities in Ontario. This framework agreement, signed on the heels of Louis Riel Day sets the course for a new, collaborative relationship between the Ontario government and the Métis Nation of Ontario.

The Ontario government and the Métis Nation of Ontario will work together to improve the well-being of Métis children, families, and communities while working to protect and promote the distinct culture, identity, and heritage of Métis people.

Through this framework agreement, the Ontario government and the Métis Nation of Ontario will also encourage economic partnership opportunities that recognize and respect Métis traditions.

"The Ontario government is committed to strengthening our relationship with Métis people in Ontario," said Brad Duguid, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs. "Through the capacity support committed to in the framework agreement, the Ontario government can better engage Métis communities in order to work with them to address mutual priorities."

"This agreement signals a new chapter in the Métis Nation's relationship with the Ontario government. It acknowledges the unique history, identity, and rights of Métis communities in Ontario and sets out a collaborative process to recognize and respect those rights,” said Gary Lipinski, Métis Nation of Ontario President. "This new partnership will also enhance the Métis Nation's ability to assist its citizens and communities through the development of a strategic business plan focussed on strengthening governance structures, institutions and accountability, while also identifying economic opportunities to move towards self-sufficiency."

QUICK FACTS

There are approximately 73,000 Métis people in Ontario, which represents approximately 30 per cent of the total Aboriginal population in Ontario (2006 Census).
The Métis Nation of Ontario employs over 150 staff across the province delivering essential health, training and employment services to Métis children, families and communities.
The Métis Nation of Ontario maintains a centralized registry of Métis citizens recognized by the Métis Nation of Ontario who are represented at the local, regional and provincial levels through Chartered Community Councils and the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario.
