Ontario Celebrates National Aboriginal Day
McGuinty Government Encourages Everyone To Honour Aboriginal People Today By Taking Part In The Many Cultural Events Across The Province

The Ontario government is extending greetings and best wishes to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples today in celebration of National Aboriginal Day.
National Aboriginal Day is celebrated on the 21st of June every year, to recognize the ongoing contributions that Aboriginal people make to this country and to this province.
Ontarians are encouraged to take part in the many cultural events and festivities hosted by Aboriginal peoples and Aboriginal organizations across Ontario. Activities being held across the province and the country today include powwows, traditional drumming and dancing, musical and theatrical performances, and cultural workshops.

“Ontario is a greater place because of the unique cultures and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples,” said Michael Bryant, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs. “Their history is an integral part of our history, and we know that working together is vital to our mutual success.”
“We are proud to support Aboriginal people on this day of celebration, and continue to move forward on bringing their issues to the forefront,” said Jeff Leal, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.

- In 1996 former Governor General Roméo LeBlanc declared June 21st as National Aboriginal Day.
- Ontario has the largest Aboriginal population of any Canadian province with more than 158,000 First Nations people; more than 73,000 Métis and just over 2,000 Inuit.
- There are 134 First Nations in Ontario.
