Our Role

Resolving land claims is a key commitment of the Ontario government and the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. The Negotiations Branch of the ministry conducts land claim negotiations on behalf of the Province of Ontario.

Negotiations are an effective way to address the legal and "on the ground" issues that arise in land claims.

The Negotiations Branch also:

• Conducts negotiations on land-related, non-claim matters as needed.
• Implements negotiated settlements.
• Develops and recommends policy in relation to land claims.
• Conducts public and stakeholder engagement, consultation and issues management.
• Maintains relationships with other ministries, governments, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations and communities in support of land claim and land-related negotiations.
• Coordinates the province's review of Additions to Reserve requests submitted by Aboriginal communities to Canada.
• Provides advice to other ministries, organizations and communities on land and resources issues related to land claims.

Resolving land claims meets the province's legal obligations to Aboriginal communities and creates a positive environment for economic development for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. It creates a better future relationship between the government and the Aboriginal community.
