At the 2009 Council of the Federation meeting in Regina, Saskatchewan last August, premiers from across the country expressed an interest in reinvigorating the federal-provincial-territorial Aboriginal affairs process. They agreed to ask ministers responsible for Aboriginal affairs to form a working group to examine how to work more effectively with the federal government to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people.
As Ontario's Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Premier Dalton McGuinty asked me to take charge of this work for Ontario, and bring together ministers of Aboriginal affairs and national Aboriginal leaders in Toronto to formalize the working group.
I look forward to welcoming my federal, provincial and territorial colleagues and representatives, and national Aboriginal leaders and their delegations.
There is a growing recognition across the country that an essential part of building stronger provinces and a stronger Canada is building stronger Aboriginal communities. I am encouraged by the participants' commitment to working together, and I am optimistic that through our cooperation and collaboration on shared priorities, we will find a new way toward achieving our goals.
