What’s the program for?
The program grants money, to those who qualify, to develop:
- small business centres that provide services, encouragement and support for business activities in Aboriginal communities, and
- community and Friendship centres that promote healthy lifestyles and provide skills training, especially among Aboriginal children and youth.
Who manages the program?
The Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs manages the program.
Who can apply?
The following groups can apply:
- First Nations, Aboriginal non-profit corporations, urban Aboriginal organizations
- Métis Nation of Ontario Charter Communities that are sponsored by the Métis Nation of Ontario Secretariat

What projects qualify for the program?
Eligible projects include:
- Buying, building, renovating or expanding community, Friendship and small business centres.
- Carrying out any studies that lead to the development of these centres.
How much money can be granted?
The program can grant up to:
- $500,000 to those who qualify for a community, Friendship or small business centre project.
- $750,000 to remote communities. These applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- $50,000 to urban Aboriginal organizations for minor renovations to community-oriented facilities.
- $50,000 for a feasibility study – an analysis of a project to find out if it can be successfully carried out.
Please note that:
- Capital funding can only be granted to the same applicant once every five years.
- The program can fund up to 90 per cent of the total cost of the project.
- Grant recipients must contribute at least 10 per cent of the remaining total cost. For community, Friendship or small business centre projects, half of that 10 per cent must be in cash and the other half may be in the form of donated labour or materials, for example. For feasibility studies, the entire 10 per cent must be in cash.
- A feasibility study must be completed before program funding can be granted.
How many parts does the program have?
There are two parts to the program:
- Ontario Native Community Infrastructure Projects
Money is provided to develop community and Friendship centres and for minor renovations of these facilities. Money can also be provided to study whether it is possible to build a community or Friendship centre. These centres provide essential services and activities. - Native Small Business Centres
Money is provided to develop small business centres that offer rental space, shared office services and business counselling in order to help businesses grow. Money can also be provided to study whether it is possible to build a small business centre.
