Plains Cree artist Jeannine Lillie is known for her photography, drawing, puppetry, sculpture, painting, print-making and traditional Plains Cree artwork. She's also known for her digital art which mixes the colonial history of First Nations people with references to modern culture.
Jeannine focuses on topics like First Nations identity, cultural prejudices, gender issues and philosophies passed down through generations.
Born in Fort Frances, Ontario and raised in northern Ontario and Manitoba, Jeannine now lives in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
She attended the visual arts program at Sault College and the fine arts program at Algoma University. In 2006, she received the university's Award of Excellence in Fine Arts Studies — an award that hadn't been given out in the previous four years.
Jeannine's work has appeared in local group exhibitions, including Sex Politics Religion: Issues we don't talk about in 2004. She also designed and produced the exhibition's catalogue.
Her published photography also includes the front covers and author's portraits of several types of books from children's novels to political essays.
