Christian Morrisseau

Christian Morrisseau has followed in his famous father's footsteps to become a talented artist in his own right. He's the youngest child of well-known Woodland artist Norval Morrisseau, who was once called the "Picasso of the North."

A member of the Keewaywin First Nation, Christian was born and raised in Red Lake, Ontario. He paints in the Woodland style, which his father first introduced in the 1960s.

The Woodland style is marked by thick lines, bright colours and two-dimensional, flat designs. It's one of the most recognizable forms of First Nations art.

Christian paints animal images, landscapes, Ojibway legends and traditions. He sold his first painting to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. It was presented as a gift at the historical treaty signing between the Inuit and the Government of Canada in October 2002.

In addition to painting, Christian teaches the Woodland style to students in Thunder Bay and other northwestern Ontario communities. He has also worked as a firefighter for the past 11 years.
